Walkthrough for Chapter 4 “Institute” – Early.

This guide is written from a single-player perspective, but the mechanics of each floor, collectibles such as Dolls, and combat details are explained with images so co-op players can benefit as well.

Things to Know

Collect 5 Dolls to Unlock an Achievement

There are a total of 5 Dolls hidden throughout the Institute. Collecting all of them will unlock the trophy for the achievement “Filed Away”.

In the walkthrough below, you can obtain 3 of them at points , , and , so be sure to collect them as you progress. (The remaining 2 can be found in the latter half of the chapter.)

There are a total of 6 Ghosts hidden throughout the Institute. Discovering all of them—by shining your light on each until they vanish—will unlock the trophy “Institutionalized”.

Institute (Early) Walkthrough

(Ghost Point)
Enter the Institute through the hole in the wall.
Before doing so, move toward the right edge and discover the Ghost.

(Doll Point)
Before peeling away the boards and moving on, head in the opposite direction to find a room where you can pick up a Doll.

Pry off the boards and move on →


Shoot the flower with your Bow, then break the wall on the right with the Wrench.
In the next area, Alone moves along the right wall first. Once the flower opens, use Low's Bow to shoot it, allowing both of you to progress safely.

(Ghost Point)
A Ghost can be found at the end of the hallway from step ③.
In the room ahead, crouch and move to the far left. Use your Bow to distract the Doctor, then open the door on the left and proceed while he’s occupied.

(Ghost Point)
Strike the gong with the Wrench to make the feet move away. Proceed into the hole that opens and you’ll find a Ghost ahead.
After that, move down the hallway and take the elevator.

Part 1
A rather tricky mechanism begins here. After exiting the elevator, move straight toward the front and push the cart near the outlet to the left.
Continue left past the seesaw room, then climb the platform and crawl through the small window. In the familiar room, hang onto the dust box and pick up the extremely familiar Doll.
Return to the seesaw room with the Doll, and throw it through the small window located at .
It seems this Doll rewrites the surroundings into the timeline of the “past” instead of the present. Areas and doors you can access—and items you can pick up—change depending on whether the Doll is with you.
You’ll be using this Doll for several upcoming puzzles, so take note.

Part 2 (Doll Point)
After exiting the seesaw room, take the Doll and re-enter the room with the bicycle. Thanks to the Doll, another Doll appears here (don’t ask why), so pick it up.
Continue down the same hallway. If you're holding the Doll, you can now cross the broken floor and enter room .
In the film room at , pull the lever and take the fuse. Bring it back with you. The door next to the film room closes behind you, but if you jump and pull the lever again, the door opens.
Once you reach the hallway, leave the Doll at , then throw the fuse into and continue toward the outlet.

(Doll Point)
Once you insert the fuse into the outlet, move the cart and pull the lever to open the door.
You can pick up the Doll located up high by bringing the cart from the left and using it as a platform.
